Black Education Act

NM House Bill 43

The Black Education Act (BEA) was created to improve Black Education within the state of New Mexico for public, chartered, and post-secondary schools. The bill’s goal is to improve graduation rates for African American students graduating from high school and post-secondary institutions.

As an academic institution, one of our methods is providing a more inclusive environment for minority students. In most recent Census data, blacks (1.7%), American Indian and Alaskan Natives (1.2%), and Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islanders alone (0.1%) make up 2.9% of the total population. Black students are the focus of our institution, their success through emotional, creative, and physical engagement in our classrooms is just the beginning! The 2021 Black Education Act sets out to improve education for Blacks in New Mexico largely through environmental experience.

Blacks recognize they must make changes to systems by being part of the decision-making process. Government, administrative roles, board placement, and representation need more diversity. The family structure in African, Caribbean, and Indigenous cultures is critical to success and is an Academy pillar. Mechanisms by Black Administrators can facilitate the successful implementation of outcome-driven actions to achieve our goals. The use of Outdoor Classrooms aligned with the proposed NMPED K-12 Outdoor Education Program will allow us to deliver a well-rounded educational experience that improves health, wellness, and awareness through discovery, experimentation, learning, and connectivity.
